Today, February 12th, 2024 marks a significant milestone in the history of Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly as far as local governance is concerned. The Assembly was one of the 259 MMDAs inaugurated across the country.
Representing His Excellency President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, Hon. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and Minister of Food and Agriculture, officially inaugurated the 3rd Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
In a statement delivered on behalf of the President, Hon. Bryan Acheampong extended congratulations to all elected assembly and unit committee members for their successful electoral mandates. Emphasizing the constitutional provision, 30 percent of the assembly was appointed in accordance with the 1992 Constitution of the Republic, complementing the elected representatives. This inclusive approach, comprising elected officials, parliamentary representatives, and district chief executives, underscores the commitment to fostering active citizen participation in the development process.
Hon. Bryan Acheampong highlighted the importance of good governance and encouraged the assembly to establish platforms such as town hall meetings, community durbars, and digital citizen engagement tools to facilitate robust interactions between duty bearers and citizens. He underscored the significance of Sections 40 to 48 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), in guiding these engagements.
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Kwasi Karikari Achamfour also used the occasion to remind the newly inaugurated Assembly and Unit Committee members of their paramount selflessness, duty, accountability, and effective representation in advancing the district’s development agenda and improving the quality of life for constituents.
The colourful event was well attended by traditional authorities, clergy, political leaders, organised groups, and staff of the Assembly, among others.
Following the successful inauguration, the Assembly was unable to elect its Presiding Member. However, a special meeting have been scheduled for Thursday, 15th February, 2024 for the election of a Presiding Member to oversee the affairs of the Assembly.

The Afigya Kwabre North District is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 43 MMDAs in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
