The programme was organized and implemented to sensitize the members of the various communities especially women and men on issues like rape, marital rape, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, forced early marriage and child marriage which is on the increase in the country. The programme was used to provide in depth education to men and women on how to handle issues of these nature.
The facilitator informed the members that, the issue of rape is very critical and needs immediate action to avert it. He said, parents should advise their children especially girl child on the kind of friends they associate with, because rape cases sometimes occur as a result of peer pressure. Parents should be watchful and take note on the kinds of clothes their girl child wears to prevent the lust they can display to prevent the issue of rape.
During the programme, the facilitator explained to the members of the abuses which sometimes occurs in marriage and which is a violation of the rights against either men/women. He added that, marital rape is a very powerful weapon that ruins marriages. He advised that, men shouldn’t force women to sex when the women is not ready for it as the act is termed marital rape.
The facilitator explained to the members that, child marriages is a violation to the rights of children who are forced into such marriages. This can ruin the lives of the children as many children who are engaged in this marriage are denied education which results in poverty in the long run. In his submissions, he informed the members that, men and women should not undermine the rights and freedoms of each other but to respect the consents and views of each other be it marriage or relationship.
The occasion was attended by the various stakeholders who contributed in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project. A total of eighty eight (88) participants attended the programme from the various communities with 52 being males and 36 being females.
