The Afigya Kwabre North District Assembly on Wednesday 6th March, 2024 joined the rest of the nation to celebrate Ghana's 67th Independence Day Anniversary with a call on Ghanaians of 18 years and above who have registered to perform their civic responsibility by voting for their preferred candidate during the polls in the December 2024.
In his keynote address delivered by the Afigya Kwabre North District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. Kwasi Karikari Achamfour on behalf of the President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo on the theme “Our Democracy, our Pride”. He said, Ghana is the first country in the Sub-Saharan to gain independence from her colonial master Britain in 1957 and becoming a republic in 1960 with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as her first democratically elected leader. Notwithstanding a couple of interruptions with military coup d’états over the years, Ghana since independence returning to constitutional rule in 1992 has enjoyed continuous democracy covering 32 years.
He added that independence means “freedom to be and live for ourselves” to which exactly 67 years ago, Ghana gained hers, he continued that, it is time to honour patriotism and remember the toil and struggle of our forefathers who fought to liberate this country from colonial rule and gave us the freedom we are enjoying today.to the students and pupils Hon. Karikari said, “the future of this land rely on you. The unity you have exalted here today through the display of our culture must transcend this day and fill every sphere of our lives. Let us love this great land of ours and re-live the times in our history where individuals exhibited true patriotism toward nation building.”
The independence parade made up of 28 schools drawn from the primary, JHS and SHS categories together with a cadet group from the Osei Tutu II College. Boamng-Maase D/A primary school and St. Mary’s R/C JHS cadet as well as the SDA Bands men thrilled the huge crowd to a variety of marching skill and gymnastics.
Awards were presented to the first 3 schools in the primary, JHS and SHS categories with Boamang D/A primary being the winner for the primary category and Boamang D/A JHS and Afigyamang SHS winning the junior and Senior high school categories.
Present were traditional authorities, service commanders, heads of department and representatives of political parties. The Member of Parliament and the Minister for National Security were all present to grace the occasion.
